Rock Island
Senior Thesis
This animation was inspired by the time I spent learning to sail during my childhood summers on Cape Cod. Although the sailboat was the size of a bathtub, as a kid this opportunity always felt like a grand fantastical pirate adventure. The contrast between this fantasy and a more mundane reality is the emotion I wanted to capture. That life and memories are more fun with imagination. While ideating for this project, I found that the best ideas came from these memories and personal experiences.

Process
Story Beats
I determined a series of situations inspired by my real life experience sailing in Cape Cod. I mentally traveled back in time to when I was a child and remembered the sorts of fun adventures I'd go on with my friends, and how back then, everything seemed so much grander and important. Maybe because we were still discovering the wonders of the world, or maybe because we were so much smaller in comparison.
Cave → Car Bridge
Kraken → Jellyfish
Big wave → Yacht
Treasure Island → Bird Poop Island

Animatic
The music and sound effects ended up being one of the most important factors for the piece. Switching back and forth from the grand music to the child voices is what added that extra layer of comedy I wanted to achieve.
Procedural Texturing
i developed a procedural texturing technique for this piece to work efficiently with the few weeks I was given to animate. All done in After Effects, a combination of Fractal Noise and Directional Blur most of the time.
