Lego Stop Motion Animation

Continuing to practice animation skills while also experimenting with combining stop motion and 2D effects in After Effects.

Software

Dragonframe and Adobe After Effects

For the character, After Effect's keylight effect works well most of the time with some tweaking, but is often unable to remove 100% of the green screen. I used a combination of mask rotoscoping and the wire removal effect to get rid of left over green areas. The face was manually animated on and used the CC Cylinder effect to get the correct angles.

Requiring some pre-planning and tedious post work, I used a green screen plate to replace the background with a solid color. Then using masked adjustment layers and the level effect to maintain the feeling of a lit environment. As well as adding five different animated textures and some slight turbulent displacement.

Adding the characters shadow back into the scene was achieved using a method found in this tutorial
